Yorkshire Day Battle

It’s not very often New Brew Thursday falls on Yorkshire Day and IPA day as well. So what better way to celebrate than with four Yorkshire-brewed beers, including two IPAs.

Theakston Brewery has been producing beer since 1827 so we were sure their session IPA would fare well in our battle.

We first became familiar with Ripon’s Hambleton Brewery back in the 2020 lockdowns and were impressed with their beers.

And North and Northern Monk are two of our favourite breweries (not only because they are Leeds-based like us).

Given the quality of these breweries, we were confident this would be a good battle.

The beers

Quencher by Theakston: Session Pale Ale 3.4%

Theakston Brewery might have been brewing for 200 years, but they aren’t afraid of making contemporary beers alongside their traditional ales. This session pale ale is only 3.4%, but it’s a lovely beer. Light, with floral notes,  malty flavours and a little bit of bitterness. Easy drinking so certainly sessionable. It’s also available on cask so keep an eye out for it in your local real ale pubs.

Brewer’s note: A delicate floral aroma leads to a deceptively full bodied sweet-melon fruitiness with a refreshing dry-hop finish. Brewed using finest Pearl Barley, English grown Sovereign hops for aroma and dry bitterness and generous quantities of El Dorado hops for fruit character. A thirst Quencher if there ever was one!

Thoroughbred by Hambleton Brewery: IPA 5%

This one wasn’t a new brew for us. We tried it back in 2020 when our neighbour did a beer run to Hambleton Brewery. All the pubs and bars were closed so they were offering some great deals on their beers. Anyway, it has been four years since we tried it, so we decided to give it another go. It’s a good IPA – like an orange sherbert sweet upfront with a long, lingering bitterness on the finish. If you like west coast IPAs, you’ll probably enjoy this beer.

Brewer’s note:

An Anglo American mashup, blending the freshest US grown Yakima Valley hops with the best Maris Otter malt the UK can offer. Our head brewer’s favourite. Gluten-free and vegan.

Beer of the night

Horde by Northern Monk: Hazy IPA 7%

This was our favourite beer of the night. It had a flavour we know and love from other Northern Monk Hazy IPAs, with other notes coming through. It was juicy, with ripe stone fruit flavours, a little darkness and maybe a little bit of fennel or aniseed (maybe).

Brewer’s note: Join the Horde. Follow our standard-bearers, holding aloft the emblems of Citra, Mosaic, and Comet hops. This Horde is full of punchy hazy notes and a deep body.

Triple Fruited Gose by North: Mango + Pineapple + Lime 4.5%

Beer pudding! A mango, pineapple and lime Triple Fruited Gose (TFG) to finish our session. Having previously rhad 14 TFGs we’re no stranger to the style. This one had a delicious, jammy, mango puree flavour. It could have benefitted from being a tad more sour and generally, we think the style suits dark fruits better but it was still a great finish to the night.

Brewer’s note: Our 28th TFG is a celebration of summer!
Bright, like the sunshine we are all hoping for, our signature slick, salty gose base has taken a tropical trip for this edition. Sweet mango, tangy pineapple and zesty lime balance beautifully to create this triple fruited gose, with a sherbet tang that is refreshingly tart and compliments the smoothie-like finish.
