Location: Sheffield| Find them: Sheffield Tap
As non-drivers, we spend a fair amount of time in train stations so it’s always good when there’s a great bar nearby. And one of our favourite station bars is The Sheffield Tap. Not only can you access it without leaving the station, but it also has its own onsite microbrewery and a wide range of draft and cask beers from local and international breweries.
What we loved
Situated in a lovely Grade II listed building at Sheffield’s main railway station, The Sheffield Tap is a brilliant place to stop for a pint or two, regardless of whether you’ve got a train to catch or not.
You can access it from inside the station or outside (just to the left of the main station entrance). Inside, you’ll find plenty of seating and a long bar that stocks a wide range of beers (and other drinks).
There are always plenty of beers on tap from local and independent breweries. You can choose from 11 hand pulls and 14 draft beers. You’ll also find plenty of other drinks on offer if you’re not in the mood for a beer.
What we drank
Morana: Cold Extra Pale 4.3% from Meanwood Brewery
We always opt for cask where we can as we want to do our bit in keeping cask beer alive. It’s not very often you see 11 different hand pulls on offer so we were a bit spoilt for choice. We decided to start with this cold extra pale from Meanwood Brewery as Meanwood is pretty local to us.
Brewer’s note: Named for the Slovenian goddess Morana and her role in ushering in the death of winter and the birth of spring this beer is far less terrifying than her many armed appearance. Nor does it typically wield a scythe. It is, however, near alabaster in colour much like her beautiful countenance. Hopped with Styrian Eagle, Dragon and Cardinal in honour of Morana’s origin, it has an enticing floral aroma teasing peach and gooseberry on the nose. The first sip reveals the fruit more deeply layering in a hit of quince. Finally, chamomile and green tea round out the flavour like the forgotten memory of catching the first scent of the blossoms of spring on the warm breeze.

Catch The Sunrise: Tropical Pale Ale 4.8% from Thornbridge Brewery
Next up we opted for a tropical pale ale from Thornbridge – one of the first breweries in the UK to it the craft beer scene. This was a fantastic pale ale – one of the best modern pale ales we’ve tried on cask.
Brewer’s note: Catch The Sunrise 4.8% Tropical Pale Ale is packed full of flavourful modern hops. The aroma is palpable, tearing from the glass with an abundance of mango and pineapple. On the palate, the beer is soft with more tropical fruitiness throughout; there is a delicate underlying bitterness for balance.
