Northern Monk is one of our favourite breweries and we were very excited when they opened The Northern Market in Leeds city centre (in what used to be Assembly Underground). They refurbished the space and gave it more of a pub vibe with a great range of beers. And they have some amazing food venues in there. It opened back in November 2023, and we’re looking forward to plenty of visits.

What we loved

We were always fans of Assembly Underground, but it felt more like somewhere to eat and go. The Northern Market feels more like a pub – somewhere you’d want to stay and have a few drinks with snacks or lunch in between.

They’ve gone for a real pub feel, with some modern twists such as a cinema room. The range of beers is great (as you’d expect) – some cask, some draft, and plenty of other drinks for the non-beer drinkers.

There are also plenty of fantastic food vendors, serving everything from Asian-style street food and shawarma to pizza and burgers.

Plus, you can hire the lounge, the speakeasy or the cinema room for your private or corporate events.

What we drank

A Little Faith (4%)

Faith (5%) is my favourite Northern Monk beer and A Little Faith is the slightly lower alcohol version at 4%. We’d already had a couple of beers so we opted for the lower ABV of A Little Faith. Not a new brew but definitely a firm favourite.

Brewer’s note: All the juice, citrus and tropical flavour of Faith, but even more sessionable at a lower ABV of 4%.

Force of Nature 5.5%

Next up, we tried a collab beer, brewed by Ossett Brewery and Northern Monk. This was a hazy rhubarb IPA and was nice and fruity. We chose it partly because it was a bit different and partly because it was served on cask and we’re trying to do our bit to keep cask alive.

Brewer’s note: This un-fined and naturally hazy IPA brewed with our friends Northern Monk from just across ‘the triangle’ celebrates the famous Yorkshire delicacy by combining it with three recently developed UK-grown hop varieties. Harlequin, Jester and Ernest contribute aromas of citrus and tropical fruits to complement the flavour of rhubarb.

Visiting

The Northern Market is located on Great George Street. The entrance is not at street level, so you’ll need to head down the steps to get in.
