Location: Newcastle upon Tyne | Find them: Firebrick Brewery
We love Newcastle (and NUFC), so when we were invited to a wedding in Alnwick, we couldn’t resist a quick lunch and beer stop in one of our favourite cities. We’d headed to Grainger Market for food (a delicious Gyros if you’re interested) and we stumbled across this gem of a taproom. Firebrick Brewery is located in Blaydon, but this cosy venue and shop has a good range of their brews on offer. Well worth a visit if you’re in the area.
What we loved
We weren’t familiar with Firebrick, but we’re glad we came across them on our brief lunch stop in Newcastle.
We’d highly recommend Grainger Market for food – we stopped in on our way up to Alnwick and on our way back three days later. We had Greek the first time and Indian the second – both were absolutely fantastic. We also grabbed some amazing freshly baked sausage rolls to eat when we got home.
And of course, we couldn’t resist popping into this taproom as soon as we spotted it. We managed to fit two beers in, but would happily have stayed for more if we had time.
As well as beers on tap, they offer plenty of their beers in cans if you want to pick up a few to go. They also have a selection of wines.
There are a few seats inside the unit as well as some “outside” (it’s all within the market itself which is all indoor).
If you’re up in Newcastle city centre and you want to sample great food and local beers, head to Grainger Market.
What we drank
Wey-Aye PA: 5.5% IPA
This was an excellent pale ale – like marmalade. Very easy drinking and we definitely could have stayed for a few pints if we didn’t have a train to catch.
Brewer’s note: Our elegant IPA benefits from late additions of cascade and centennial hops, the grain bill is enhanced with a light touch of Munich malt.
Sugar Spun: 5.2% Stout
A solid stout and exactly what you’d expect from this style of beer. Looks beautiful in the glass, with lovely stout flavours.
Brewer’s note: Gold award winner at the CAMRA Tyneside & Northumberland beer festival 2019. Sister beer to Cushy Butterfield with burnt sugar/candyfloss background notes.
