Brewery: Lovelane | Location: Liverpool | Find them: Love Lane Brewery

I was lucky enough to visit Lovelane Brewery in Liverpool when I was invited to speak at an event there back in 2023. It’s a lovely little brewery, bar, and kitchen, and I’d recommend dropping by for drinks or food if you’re in the area.

More and more of their beers have been appearing in our local supermarkets so we decided to grab a few for this month’s beer battle.

The beers

Lager & Baltic Lager 4.4%

We weren’t 100% sure whether the lager and baltic lager were different beers, but we came to the conclusion that one was probably a rebrand of the other so we tried both.

They were both good lagers – light and sweet – but the bottled version had a slightly maltier flavour while the can had more floral notes.

Brewer’s note: Pilsner and Munich malts provide a backbone to our take on a classic brew.

Pale Ale 4.5%

The Pale Ale, we’ve had before, but we wanted to compare it with other Lovelane brews. It was an ok beer, but nothing special. We’d describe it as one-dimensional – not too sweet, not too bitter, not too fruity – just ok.

Brewer’s note: This Pale Ale was originally brewed under a railway bridge on the famous Liverpool Love Lane. The biscuit malt balances the whole leaf citrus hops for a refreshing lasting taste.

Session IPA 4.1%

The Session IPA had a lower ABV than the pale ale, but was more flavourful. It was unfiltered (so slightly hazier) and well-balanced with stone fruit aromas and more bitterness in the taste. And definitely sessionable.

Brewer’s note: Pale ale with Citra, Colombus and Chinook hops.

NEIPA 5%

The New England IPA was another good beer – it had a peachy, yoghurt, creaminess about it and went down very easily.

Brewer’s note: None
