After an event we had booked was cancelled, we decided to take the day off anyway and stick to our plan of heading over to Manchester. We took the opportunity to visit two fantastic taprooms. Our first stop was Track and we could have happily stayed there all afternoon.
What we loved
As you’d expect from a large industrial unit, Track taproom doesn’t look like much from the outside. In fact, if you weren’t looking for it, you could easily pass by without even knowing it was there. However, inside is one of the best taprooms we’ve visited.
What we loved about Track is that you can see the brewery from the taproom and watch the beer being made as you drink it. There’s also a great outdoor seating area that’s nicely sheltered from the wind.
Above the bar is a menu of beers, listing the name, style, abv and so on. But if you aren’t sure what to go for, the staff are more than happy to help guide you. We were given recommendations and a few tasters so we could make the right selection.
We decided to start with one of the core beers and then try a couple of different styles so we could get a good feel for Track beers. All of the beers we tried were excellent and we will definitely be heading back to this fantastic taproom in the future.
And the added bonus is that there’s another great brewery and taproom – Cloudwater – just over the road.
What we drank
Sonoma: Pale Ale 3.8%
We started with one of Track’s core beers – Sonoma – which is available on draft and cask (as well as in cans). We had a taster of each and there’s definitely a difference, but we opted for the draft and enjoyed it out in the sunshine. It’s a great pale ale, given the low abv – juicy, tropical and hazy.
Brewer’s note: Sonoma encapsulates what we love at Track. A refreshing, sessionable, hazy pale ale to be shared, which shows our love for hops & the pursuit of pale perfection. With a simple malt base & hopped generously with Mosaic, Centennial & Citra it bursts forth with resinous notes of sticky mandarin, and grapefruit. It finishes crisp & clean with a soft, pithy bitterness.
Lipari: Lemon Sour 5%
We’re big fans of sour beers and have tried a few over the years. This one is one of the best. Imagine a sour homemade lemonade – sweet, sour, lemony, and sherberty. That’s pretty much the best way to describe the flavour. Delicious.
Brewer’s note: “Awake! Avast! Hold tight your buns, if buns you do hold dear. For time has come to wake and run and not give way to fear!” This is a puckering, lip-smackingly quenching sour that packs a real punch of layered lemon tartness backed up by a balanced sweetness. Sour, pithy and incredibly aromatic, this is grown-up liquid sherbet lemon!
Cowboy Town: American Brown 5%
We haven’t tried many American Browns, so we decided to give this one a go and we didn’t regret it. It had a smoky, roasty flavour almost with a hint of Marmite.
Brewer’s note: Smooth, with a slight caramel sweetness, and a solid malt backbone; Cowboy Town, our first American Brown Ale hits all of the right spots we love about this style. A light dry hop of Centennial, Chinook and Challenger add a pleasant bitterness to aid drinkability.
Visiting
Track brewery and taproom is located on an industrial estate, just a short walk from Piccadilly station. It is conveniently located across the road from Cloudwater brewery and taproom, so we highly recommend visiting both if you’re in the neighbourhood.
